I've done this test several times before and I usually get a much lower stability rating. I have noticed I've been more stable recently. I still take certain things personally and get upset about emotional issues, but I never worry about the broken computer or running out of money (which we still seem to do) or anything like that. I never get anxious at home. When I get a job and have been doing it for a few months, I'm going to do this test again and see what else changes.

Speaking of getting a job - tomorrow I am going to take my application form back to Clinton's (a card shop) and take my CV into a cheap shoe shop, BB's (a kind of coffee & muffin place in the shopping centre), and WH Smiths (a newsagent), all of whom are advertising. Game still haven't got back to me but they haven't taken their sign down so hopefully they're still thinking about people. I'm not sure where I'd rather work - Game would be great, but so would BB's because I could probably get lots of free/cheap smoothies.

The new mouse arrived, but it's completely different to the old one. I don't know if I can get used to it, it just feels less precise.

My Sailor Moon DVD arrived but they sent me Volume 1 instead of Volume 2. I didn't mind too much though, and watched it anyway. Apparently the next DVD they're going to send me is Serial Experiments Lain, which I'm looking forward to! We finished watching Star Wars: Clone Wars - it was okay but there wasn't enough plot. But until Serial Experiments Lain arrives I have nothing to watch! :[ I can't watch Charmed on my own anymore because Chris and I watch it together now (he is so in love with Piper, it's cute). I might watch one of my old favourite movies, like the Railway Children or something. And try not to sob too much over my knitting.

When I have finished knitting the thing I am knitting (probably tonight!), I will post pictures. Its not really that big of a secret and I've mentioned it to a few people in comments already but still I don't want to talk about now, I'll save all my squeeing for the actual post. Heh, it's not as exciting as I'm making it sound.

Tomorrow my mum and Mike are in Southend and Lucy's at a party in Birmingham so I am going to stay the night at their house so I can babysit their dog, Muffin. Chris is coming too and we are going to watch Sky and enjoy being in a tidy house.

And now I'm off to buy bread so that I can make myself eggy bread (french toast)!

I haven't been posting many links here lately, because I'm HOPING that many friends and relations are following my adventures here, and some of my frothier political rants aren't appropriate for, say, Josh's grandparents' leisure reading. However, this William Raspberry
column in the Washington Post should be required reading.

And an article about Amish farmers growing African vegetables. Very cool.

Meanwhile, my computer teased and tantalized me last night by suddenly recognizing a wireless network in my dorm room, where none had been before. For awhile it would connect, but then not let me actually open any websites (while not giving the usual error messages - the sites just wouldn't open). Then it would connect but constantly conk out. And then it would start to connect, chug for a while, and then say it was "Not connected" at the top of the window but "connected" in the text, and I would have to disconnect and do it all over, to no avail.

Grr. I hope there's a wireless network in the Altstadt, or at the very least a good cafe with cheap tea ...

Meanwhile, language class continues to be frustrating; we're learning a lot of the building blocks of sentences (vocabulary, verb conjugations) but none of the mortar (systematic memorization of prepositions, DECLENSIONS, etc.). And some of my classmates are unbelievably slow in German given that they all speak at least comprehensible English. However, 4 of us (2 Americans, a Swede and an Estonian, all female and all with excellent English) are banding together to get extra instruction, starting tomorrow. We may continue to meet and work out of more advanced textbooks in October and beyond. The good news is, with all the reinforcement in the form of German being everywhere, I'm retaining vocabulary a lot better than I did with e.g. Latin.

Source: I'm at my mum's now. Chris should be coming soon.

I took my CV into BB's and the shoe shop. I went into Game and asked when I could expect to hear back about my application, and the girl told me they'd just done one lot of interviews but they were going to do some more very soon. I suspect that the interviews just gone are for the permenant positions and the next lot are for the Christmas temps, because I know they were advertising for both. So hopefully they'll want me for temping, but who knows...

When I was little I had a Science Encyclopedia that I used to read all the time. I don't know where it went, I wouldn't have thrown it away but maybe somebody else did when I was too busy being a teenager. So I ordered it from the library catalogue and it arrived today! Its exactly the same one as I had before, although it has a different cover now. I hope it's as much fun as I remember, and not really childish and easy. I doubt I have really become any better at science than I was when I was about nine. I love reading about science, it just was never my strong point at school.

I also ordered and collected Great Northern, the last Swallows and Amazons book in the series, and the only one I've not read. It'll be sad reading it, but exciting still. I say it's the only one I haven't read, but I actually haven't read Coot Club or the Big Six either. They just don't look that exciting to me, I was never that keen on Dick and Dot compared to the others (even the first S&A; book I ever read was Picts and Martyrs). But I shall read them next.

Its so hot! I'm fed up of summer. I want the winter to hurry up. Despite it being really hot, I am still going to exercise on my mum's Gazelle glider thing. I wonder if I can knit and glide at the same time?

We Gave Away Shoes, Not Mortgages

Our friend href="http://bayosphere.com/blog/dan_gillmor/20050918/bubble_bubble_bubble">Dan Gillmor at Bayosphere continues to watch with alarm as more people "qualify" for highly speculative home mortgages. If or when conditions change, home buyers could be as desperate as shoe winners to make it to the front of the line.

Dan makes note of an LA Times story that says Cheap Loans are Under Fire:

Dan says:

It's not cheap loans that are under fire so much as cheap loans to people who would never, ever have qualified for a mortgage in more rational times. The financial industry is helping to inflate this bubble -- as it does with all bubbles -- playing the game, supported by collaborators in other industries who are also winning big under the current system, with indifference to the consequences.

The only way people will keep up with these mortgages, once rates rise, is either to cut back on other spending, make more money or -- as they're doing now -- taking out new loans based on appreciating values. But values can't possibly continue to rise the way they've done so far, and in fact are likely to drop in overheated places like California.

The cruel game ends with defaults by borrowers, who'll also discover something new: a just-minted bankruptcy law that doesn't let them simply walk away from their home. Lenders will pursue these deadbeats.

And with the new bankruptcy laws it could be even harder for those borrowers to get back on their feet.

Carnival in Rio

Posted: Sun, 18 Sep 2005 15:33:51 -0800

Source:

Today's event at Union Square has been crazy but it's not exactly Carnival in Rio starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Pepper at the Daily Pepper says there are copies of this fine film available on the Internet and might just make a holi great holiday gift.

Per the LA Times: "Soon after Arnold Schwarzenegger entered the 2003 recall campaign, a tabloid publisher that was recruiting him as a consultant tried to suppress a risque 1983 Playboy video starring the future governor."

Now its time to satisfy all those inquiring minds who want to know. The video, "Carnival in Rio," is available all over the web, and we should wield it as a weapon since that Ah-nold is running again.

The film was released on Laserdisc and is reviewed by Doug Pratt of DVDLaser.com, who sums of "Carnival in Rio" thusly:

An honest-to-goodness travelogue, narrated by an honest-to-goodness Arnold Schwarzenegger, the hour-long 1983 program follows Schwarzenegger around Rio de Janeiro during carnival time as he gets on quite intimately with his two Brazilian hostesses--who pose topless in a couple of sequences--participates in carnival activities, and generally makes a rousing fool of himself, to the delight of all.

(snip)

The tape that AMI tried to buy up is elusive, but AMI couldn't erase all traces of this mess. Thank goodness for the Internet. There are three copies available at Amazon. You can buy it on eBay as well. It makes for the perfect holiday gift.

One of the highlights of the film involves Ah-nold teaching a woman how to eat a carrot. A screenshot of Ah-nold and the Phallic Carrot is available at Brooklyn's Rooftop Shots, courtesy of the men at the Found Footage Film Festival, which shows clips of Ah-nold's magical trip to Brazil.

Just my luck, the Found Footage Film Festival will be at the Parkway in Oakland tonight, and I'll be back (ha, ha) with a full report.

We'll be waiting to see what you "found"

Matching mary-jane slippers and gloves :D I am actually still working on the second glove, but I wanted to post the pics anyway. The sad thing is they match my website XD That wasn't on purpose though, I just like those colours at the moment. They match my pyjamas too, which is cute.

I got the mary-jane pattern from here. They were really really easy, the k2tog wasn't half as hard as I thought it would be! So now I know how to k2tog and how to use more than one colour.

Next I am going to knit some slippers and gloves for Lucy, and then I am going to try knitting little sweaters for babies, for this charity. I want to do something useful!

This mouse is REALLY annoying me. Sometimes when I click, it doesn't click. And sometimes when I click, it thinks I clicked a different option instead of the one I actually did click. I am not just clicking on the wrong thing - this has been happening all day and I don't think I'd make that many mistakes. Sometimes I know I definitly clicked something different. It's really annoying me, I keep losing tabs and accidentally clicking on stupid adverts. I wonder if we ring them whether they'll send us another or if they'll get fed up of sending us new things. Or maybe it's just a problem with this model, it does look kind of cheap. I wish our old mouse hadn't broken!

That includes an auction for some of the fabo shoes with the proceeds going to help the victims...

One of my other weekend projects involves editing the audio interview I did with Liz of Badgerbag on Friday. I plan to have it live on Monday.

Liz is still keeping close tabs on the relief efforts going on around the Astrodome where many of the Katrina evacuees remain. She notes another big event is preventing volunteers from working there this weekend.

Reliant center yesterday told all the volunteers not to come today (Sunday) because of "The Game" -- some game of the Texas Rangers or something at the Stadium - and they didn't want the volunteers parking there because it would interfere with The Game. a reliant employee, just some yellow shirt person low down in the hierarchy, not anyone in charge but the only person Mark could find, said "You don't UNDERSTAND. There's a GAME." Mark: "No, you don't understand. There's 2000 people living here."

(snip)

I am pretty disgusted with that situation. The Game. WTF.

I know it's not the point.. but the Rangers are an Arlington (Dallas-Ft Worth) based baseball team. The Houston Texans play football at Reliant...

And the home team lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-7

Its not really that big of a secret and I've mentioned it to a few people in comments already but still I don't want to talk about now, I'll save all my squeeing for the actual post. Heh, it's not as exciting as I'm making it sound.

Tomorrow my mum and Mike are in Southend and Lucy's at a party in Birmingham so I am going to stay the night at their house so I can babysit their dog, Muffin. Chris is coming too and we are going to watch Sky and enjoy being in a tidy house.

And now I'm off to buy bread so that I can make myself eggy bread (french toast)!

Big spider!!!!!

Source: The huge spider came back :O But luckily Chris managed to get it out of the window and Lucy very bravely took a photo for me.

It was so big that Lucy mistook the shadow of Chris' arm for it at one point. She says its body was about an inch and a half long and an inch wide and the legs were about three inches but I don't know because I was hiding in the back room.

Maybe There's Hope for TV After All

Everyday at the TV station we get an excel spreadsheet with a complete breakdown of the previous day's ratings by quarter hour. Thus we can know pretty much exactly how many households were watching each of the stations in town at any point during the day.

One of the elements of the ratings is what's called the HUT levels... which stands for Households Using Television. This is the total number of homes where the TV set is turned on at the moment. (The Bay Area has some of the lowest overall HUT levels of any market I've worked in... which is what happens when you live someplace where people actually have things to do...)

The TV bosses see these declining numbers and recognize what this means for the future of our industry. However, thanks to Dave at Davenetics we may have stumbled on the future of broadcast network television... just figuring out how to clone this guy...

This may not sound like that big of a deal to you. After all, there doesn’t seem to be anything particularly difficult about setting a record by watching TV for a really long time.

A guy named Suresh Joachim did just that as he sat on his couch and watched the tube for 69 hours and 45 minutes.

Uh, is it just me or does that seem like no big deal. I do that everytime my wife goes out of town on business.

And he got a five minute break every hour and a fifteen minute break every eight hours.

Please. This is cake.

But wait.

Joachim watched that many hours of NETWORK TV. Ok, that sounds pretty tough.

Yeah when he could have been watching infomercials and Dr. Gene Scott instead.

Coming Home to A Different Struggle

Historic, romantic Meersburg

... as Josh put it to me in his email informing me that he would be arriving in said steeply sloping, medieval city at 7:05 pm last night. Unfortunately, as he has already detailed on his livejournal (Josh, you forgot to tell everyone about Schreibergasse again!) he neglected to inform me that the last leg of his journey would be by bus, AND I had ended up taking the wrong ferry, so things were a bit confused. In Konstanz, most ferries - the touristy ones that ply up and down the lake to the Rhine, Switzerland and Austria, and the catamaran to Friedrichshafen - leave from the wharf near the Bahnhof and Konzilgebaude (where the Council was held in 1414-1418). So I headed down there to take the ferry to Meersburg. I paid 8 euros for a ticket. Now, this is not an unreasonable price for a ticket, but I had been led to believe that the ticket would be ridiculously cheap, like 4 euros round trip. Also that the ferry would leave every 15 minutes, but the ticket seller told me that the next one was in an hour. I eventually figured out that in fact there was another ferry which left from somewhere else. However, by this time I was already on the boat to Meersburg. When I arrived in Meersburg, I asked for the train station, but was told there wasn't one, which caused me to panic. The staff person at the ferry landing spoke no English, so we didn't get much beyond, "My husband said he was coming to Meersburg, where is the train station? No train station, CRAP!" but THANKFULLY I ran into two very nice middle-aged ladies with British accents who apparently knew the turf - I don't know if they were German and they seemed to be speaking English to each other, but whatever - who explained to me that the Stadtwerke ferry, the one with the 4-euro fare, was a CAR ferry and landed at the bus station, a few hundred meters down the lake shore. I thanked them profusely, found the bus stop, and met Josh. We had dinner (stodgy German egg noodles, wiener schnitzel, venison in red wine sauce, overdressed salad, apfel strudel) and wandered about Meersburg, which is exceedingly charming, with steep cobbled streets, a remarkably intact bishop's palace, lots of half-timbered houses, etc. They were having a wine festival, but we didn't go in. Unfortunately, while on the ferry wharf I was too distracted to appreciate the dressed-up wedding party that went by on foot along the shore.

We came back on the cheap ferry, which it turns out lands northeast of the university, and eventually got home, though the last number nine bus had gone so we had to walk in the rain. Today, again as Josh has detailed, we looked around the Aldstadt, Josh saw our future apartment, we had baguettes and chocolate croissants for lunch while sitting by the lake as a loud and colorful kids' festival went on behind us (face painting, drumming, "bicycle buses" - you'd never know in Konstanz that Germany's birthrate is falling). We tagged along on the orientation program's historical tour of the city in the afternoon, but the guide a) tried to speak German even though she was leading the group who had asked for the tour in English, b) was rather rude to Nadine when she offered to translate and to Josh when he asked if she could talk a bit louder, and c) didn't really seem to know her stuff. We would have stuck with it because there was going to be free coffee and cake at the end, but I really had to pee. I hate my bladder.

It was funny, however, since the heavens had opened just as we decided to cut out, to watch the legions of soaked kids and parents fleeing the carnival. I'm still not sure how the number 2 bus avoided bursting its walls.
